概念区分

室内设计是理解人的行为以在建筑物内创建功能空间的艺术和科学。装饰是指对带有装饰元素的空间进行陈设或装饰，有时还提供建议和实际帮助。简而言之，室内设计师可以装饰，但装饰师不设计。

开设学位（及对专业背景要求）

美国室内设计专业通常开设在设计学院，建筑学院或者人文学院等，设置的学位有Master of Arts in Interior Design, Master of Fine Arts in

Interior Design, Master of Interior Design, Master of Professional Studies in Special Track (e.g. Lighting Design, Sustainable Interior Environments，Health Care Design).

不同的学位，对于申请人的专业背景有不同要求：

·    Master of Professional Studies in Special Track学位，针对本科学位是室内设计申请人，时长1年。

·    Master of Arts 学位，一般是针对本科专业就是室内设计，建筑或者风景园林等专业的学生设置的。时长基本在2年。

·    Master of Fine Arts 学位，一般是针对本科专业非以上提及的申请人设置。时长基本在3年。（在部分设计学院，Master of Fine Arts in Interior Design提供给室内设计专业背景的人申请，时长2年。注意区分。）
