A. Essay (Required)

At the University of Washington, we consider the college essay as our opportunity to see the person behind the transcripts and the numbers. Some of the best statements are written as personal stories. In general, concise, straightforward writing is best, and that good essays are often 300 to 400 words in length.

Maximum length: 500 words

The UW will accept any of the five Coalition prompts.

Choose from the options listed below.

Tell a story from your life, describing an experience that either demonstrates your character or helped to shape it.

Describe a time when you made a meaningful contribution to others in which the greater good was your focus. Discuss the challenges and rewards of making your contribution.

Has there been a time when you’ve had a long-cherished or accepted belief challenged? How did you respond? How did the challenge affect your beliefs?

What is the hardest part of being a teenager now? What’s the best part? What advice would you give younger siblings or friends (assuming they would listen to you)?

Submit an essay on a topic of your choice.

Essay Prompts

The prompts for the 2018-2019 application year are:

1.        Tell a story from your life, describing an experience that either demonstrates your character or helped to shape it.

告诉我们一个生活中的故事，这个故事描述了一个展现你性格或塑造你性格的经历。

解题：

经历可以是广泛的。经历可以是一个和有影响力的人的会面，一个促使你行动的新闻故事，一个家庭事件，或者对别人来说没什么的，对你却有特殊意义的东西或事情。如果你不认为有什么事情塑造了你的性格，也不用担心，只需选择一个经历，这个经历能告诉我们一些关于你的东西。

2.        Describe a time when you made a meaningful contribution to others in which the greater good was your focus. Discuss the challenges and rewards of making your contribution.

翻译：

请描述你曾经认真帮助别人的一段经历。说说你遇到的挑战和你获得的奖励。

解题：

这题从选材角度上来说比较难，原因是，首先这个经历的初衷是去帮助别人，这种经历或许所有人都有，但是如果只是像慰问老人，照顾小孩这样子的，肯定是上不了台面的；其次，这题的关键还要说说你遇到的挑战，换句话说，一帆风顺的事情可能不行。反向去理解这题，招生官可能是希望通过这题了解什么呢？

公益活动是国外高中生的必修课，每个学期都是有时间要求的，但是并不是所有人做公益活动都能很顺利。当好心办事遇到困难时，之后采取的行动才是这题的关键。

3.        Has there been a time when you’ve had a long-cherished or accepted belief challenged? How did you respond? How did the challenge affect your beliefs?

翻译：

你一直秉持的信念或者教条是否被质疑过？如果有的话，请说说事情的经过。信念被质疑之后，你还坚信之前的信念吗？

解题：

本体选材略简单，但是写起来还是略有难度的。我们从记事起到现在，总是有自己一直坚信不疑的东西，例如，好好学习，未来才能有好工作，例如，努力工作才能有好的未来；挑选一个你自己一直坚信的信条，说说这个信条是怎么被别人或者被社会质疑的。这题的难点是，最后这篇文书要和自己联系起来，不能写成论文。所以要突出这个质疑本身，或者，被质疑之后，带给自己的变化。（没变化，其实也是一种变化，因为你更加坚信了）

4.        What is the hardest part of being a teenager now? What’s the best part? What advice would you give a younger sibling or friend (assuming they would listen to you)?

翻译：

青少年最难的地方在哪？最好的呢？如果有人听你的话，你会给比你小的兄弟姐妹或者朋友什么建议？

解题：

这题慎选！中国有句俗话叫，身在福中不知福；所以，对于还是青少年的学生来说，要写青少年最好的地方在哪里，是比较难的，因为你们还没有经历成年、壮年和老年，所以只能和孩童时期进行比较，所以，如果拿青少年期和孩童比较，结果肯定是狭窄的；同样，说不好也有类似的限制。

对比两个东西，而且要展示自己的特点，这就是这个题目的初衷，如果选取的角度可以的话，这题未尝不是值得一试。

5.        Submit an essay on a topic of your choice.

解题：

题目自拟，所以，只要这篇文书满足以下两个要求，都是可以的。要求一，这篇文书要写和你相关的，例如写对你影响重大的一个人，最后要回到这个人对你的影响体现在哪里，不要只写这个人。（真实案例，曾经有位同学写他的爷爷怎么怎么厉害，600字的文书写了他爷爷500字，然后招生官给他回信，他们想录取他的爷爷），或者写你关心的一个事件，最后要写出你的思考，你的行动。

要求二，写文书就是给自己写一个广告词，目的是让学校看到一个他们希望招过去的学生。所以，写你经历了多少人生悲剧，对申请没有任何好处，关键是写你怎么从各种人生悲剧中走出来，最终达到喜大普奔。同理，大部分的学校都是有单独要求的文书的，除非你认为你不写自己的专业兴趣，这篇文书就不能最好的展示你的特点，不然这篇文书就别写自己的专业兴趣。

B. Short Response (Required)

Maximum length: 300 words

Our families and communities often define us and our individual worlds.  Community might refer to your cultural group, extended family, religious group, neighborhood or school, sports team or club, co-workers, etc.  Describe the world you come from and how you, as a product of it, might add to the diversity of the University of Washington.

Tip

Keep in mind that the University of Washington strives to create a community of students richly diverse in cultural backgrounds, experiences, values, and viewpoints.

我们的家庭，所在的团体常常定义了我们个人。团体可以指你所在的文化群体、大家庭、宗教团体、邻里或是学校、运动队或俱乐部、同事等等。描述一下你来自的一个世界，以及作为这个世界的一部分，你可以怎样丰富华盛顿大学的多样性。

C. Additional Information About Yourself or Your Circumstances (Optional)

Maximum length: 200 words

You are not required to write anything in this section, but you may include additional information if something has particular significance to you. For example, you may use this space if:

You are hoping to be placed in a specific major soon

A personal or professional goal is particularly important to you

You have experienced personal hardships in attaining your education

Your activities have been limited because of work or family obligations

You have experienced unusual limitations or opportunities unique to the schools you attended

如果有什么对你很重要的信息，你可以利用这个部分，例如

1.         你想在短期内学习某个专业

2.         有一个对你特别重要的个人和或专业的目标

3.         在学习中你遇到的个人方面的困难

4.         由于工作或家庭责任，导致你课外活动受限

5.         你所上的学校有不同寻常的局限或机会

破题：这里可以写一些额外的信息，比如某些考试没考好，就可以在这里解释，例如生病了。又比如活动做的比较少，也可以解释原因，比如学校成天让你上课，导致没时间做。另外，就是如果你有特别明确的想学的专业，或有清晰的个人或职业目标，也可以写。总的标准，就是写下对你特别重要的事。

D. Additional Space (Optional)

You may use this space if you need to further explain or clarify answers you have given elsewhere in this application, or if you wish to share information that may assist the Office of Admissions. If appropriate, include the application question number to which your comment(s) refer.

Format for the essays

Content is important, but spelling, grammar, and punctuation are also considered.

We recommend composing in advance, then copy and paste into the application. Double-spacing, italics, and other formatting will be lost, but this will not affect the evaluation of your application.

We’ve observed that most students write a polished formal essay yet submit a more casual Short Response. Give every part of the writing responses your very best effort, presenting yourself in standard, formal English.

Proofread, proofread, proofread!

Tip

Write like it matters, not like you’re texting. This is an application for college, not a message to your BFF. Writing i instead of I, cant for cannot, u r for you are: not so kewl.
