Remember the song “Hero” by Mariah Carey, released in 1993?
Just two days ago, Mariah Carey helped to usher in the Easter weekend, with a special performance of “Hero” that she dedicated to those on the front-lines of the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
“There’s a hero… If you look inside your heartYou don’t have to be afraid… Of what you areThere’s an answer… If you reach into your soulAnd the sorrow that you know… And then a hero comes along… With the strength to carry onAnd you cast your fears aside… And you know you can surviveSo when you feel like hope is gone… Look inside you and be strongAnd you’ll finally see the truth… That a hero lies in you.”
Heroes exist in many parts of our lives, even in COLLEGE APPLICATION ESSAYS!!
Wake Forest University (维克森林大学), located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is one of the premier liberal arts universities in the nation. It is known for its small classes, faculty engagement and MANY SUPPLEMENTAL ESSAYS.During the 2019-2020 college application season, students were required to complete 8 required essay prompts for Wake Forest. We live in an age intensely interested in heroes. Professor Joseph Campbell defines “hero” as “someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” Describe a hero in public life and how and why, in your opinion, they meet Professor Campbell’s definition. (150 words)
So, the question being asked here is rather straightforward. First, identify a “hero” and then provide examples as to why that person has “given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” It is certainly true that your hero should be someone who exists in the “public” world. BUT, they do not have to be a mainstream peacemaker or celebrity.NOTE: There will be a lot of applicants writing about famous people like Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, etc. Hence, be extra careful who you choose to write about.
Some colleges may not ask straightforward questions like “Tell me about a hero”. Instead, they may ask you about a “famous historical figure”. Similarly, you will need to address the question like how you’d address a question on a “hero”.
