(Victoria University)
(Victoria University)
(Emmanuel College)
Victoria University ("Vic" for short) is a federated school of the University of Toronto, consisting of Victoria College and Emmanuel College. Victoria University is somewhat separated from the rest of the university geographically, bordering Queen's Park, and being located on the eastern portion of the campus along with St. Michael's College. Victoria College is today home to approximately 3,500 undergraduate students.
Traditionally, Victoria has attracted students with high academic reputations, maintaining its long reputation as one of Canada's strongest institutions of higher education.
Victoria is presently the wealthiest college at U of T by net assets. In part this has been because of alumni donations, but much of the growth is specifically due to the rapidly increasing value of Victoria's large real estate holdings in downtown Toronto. Today, the College has a securities portfolio worth approximately $78 million and a real estate portfolio worth $80 million.
Emmanuel College
Emmanuel College is the United Church of Canada theological college of Victoria University at the University of Toronto. It is a member institution of the Toronto School of Theology.
In 1969 the Toronto School of Theology (TST) was created as an independent federation of 7 schools of theology, including the divinity faculties of Emmanuel College. Within its own federation, U of T granted all but theology or divinity degrees. In May 1974, along with the other federated universities, St. Michael's and Trinity, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the University of Toronto, establishing the terms of their new relationship with the Faculty of Arts and Science. Since 1978, by virtue of a change made in its charter, the University of Toronto has granted theology degrees conjointly with Emmanuel College and other TST's member institutions.
