COVID-19 in New Zealand

As at noon on Friday 20 March there were 28 confirmed cases in New Zealand and no deaths. All cases are recently returned international travellers (or an immediate family member). To date there has been no confirmed community transmission, though this may change. The Ministry of Health advises that with continued vigilance, the chance of widespread community outbreak is expected to remain low. The University of Auckland Health Centre has been conducting virus tests for students and staff and thus far no one has tested positive.

The New Zealand Government has further strengthened travel restrictions, closing the New Zealand border to most travellers from 23:59 on Thursday 19 March 2020.

New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, residents with valid travel conditions and their immediate family (partner or spouse, legal guardian and dependent children under the age of 24) can still come to New Zealand. Student visa holders will not be able to travel to New Zealand at this time unless they are travelling with an immediate family member who is a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident. The decision will be reviewed in 14 days. All arrivals into New Zealand, regardless of citizenship or residence status are required to self-isolate for 14 days.

新西兰公民、永久居民、符合有效旅行条件的居民及其近亲属（伴侣或配偶、法定监护人和24岁以下的受抚养子女）仍可来新西兰。 学生签证持有人目前无法来新西兰，除非其与是新西兰公民或永久居民的近亲属一起来新西兰。 该决定将在14天内审视。 进入新西兰的所有人都必须自我隔离14天，无论其国籍或居留身份。 

New Leadership

On Monday 16 March, Professor Dawn Freshwater took office as the new Vice-Chancellor of the University of Auckland. Prof Freshwater is newly arrived from Australia where she led both the Group of Eight universities as Chair and the University of Western Australia as Vice-Chancellor.

3月16日（星期一），Dawn Freshwater教授担任奥克兰大学新任校长。 Freshwater教授不久前从澳大利亚来到新西兰。在澳大利亚，她担任“澳大利亚八校联盟”主席并担任西澳大利亚大学副校长。

Teaching Free Week 23-27 March 2020

There will be a suspension of teaching for one week from 23 – 27 March. For students in China on study plans, this means new lecture recordings for courses will not be available for next week. For students in New Zealand, it means there is no teaching for the next week. The purpose of the Teaching Free Week is to allow our staff to focus on preparations for remote teaching in the event of a partial campus closure in response to COVID-19. The intention is for the University to be able to be in full digital teaching and learning mode from the following week (30 March) onwards if required. Semester 1 will be extended by one week to account for the break, meaning that Semester 2 timing may also shift slightly.

May Graduation Postponed

Following recent advice from the New Zealand Government on large public gatherings, the University of Auckland has regrettably postponed the May Graduation ceremonies.

April 9 Deferral date

Students on study plans have until April 9 to withdraw or defer their studies without penalty. We encourage students to stick with their study plan if this is working for them and note that students who wish to defer studies can choose to withdraw from some rather than all their courses if they prefer.

参加学习计划的学生可以在4月9日之前退出或推迟学习，而不会受到处罚。 我们鼓励学生在可行的情况下坚持学习计划；请注意，如果希望推迟学习的学生愿意，那么其可以选择退出某些而非全部课程。
