地质学专业分类
地质学学习的内容是关于地球的物质组成、内部构造、外部特征、各层圈之间的相互作用和演变历史的知识体系。是研究地球及其演变的一门自然科学
地质学则研究地质方面的问题，地形地貌，岩石，和石油钻探也有关系。地质学研究地球物理化学等物质性质及其关系，偏微观。地质专业往往伴随着大量的实地实习，毕业后这方面的工作也是去各种艰苦环境勘探，但是就业率非常高。
地质学分支包括：矿物学，岩石学，矿床地质学，地球化学，动力地质学，构造地质学，地貌学，地球物理学，地质力学，古生物学，地层学，历史地质学，古地理学，地质年代学，水文地质学，工程地质学，环境地质学，灾害地质学，生态地质学。
英国地质学专业优势
l 从十九世纪中叶开始，科学研究的传统在英国的科学界一直占据着统治地位，这种风气在地质学领域尤为盛行。更重要的是英国的科学职业化正是肇始于地质学，而非已经成熟的物理学或其他学科，因此英国较易对地质类的学科也非常重视。
l 同时，英国的硕士的课程设置非常灵活，学生可以根据自己的兴趣爱好和将来的发展方向来自己选择专业领域和相应科目，使得学生们可以有的放矢;
l 再加上英国的学制比较短，使得在众多留学国家中，在英国获取该专业硕士学位的优势脱颖而出。
地质学就业方向
地质学的专业比较专，属于地理科学里的一个基础课。出野外考察比较多，需要登山跑野外，常常需要在比较偏远的地方将沉重的样品带回来，这是一个体力活。现在地质方面使用电脑技术也比较多了，常常是使用电脑模型计算、分析带回来的样品，统计学的知识要求比较多了。地质学得比较好的，往往都是企业抢手的技术人才，就业基本不存在问题。近年来特别是资源勘查专业或者是区域地质调查专业（很接近地质学专业）异常火爆。
Ø 地质队，主要是跑野外的，利用地质方法，物理方法，地球化学方法以及地质遥感等找矿，多集中于金属矿种
Ø 矿山企业，不喜欢出野外的可以到矿山企业，由于矿山企业的存在，往往会带动周边区域的经济文化等发展。
Ø 勘查设计研究院，也需要跑一些野外，但是多是技术指导方面的，出去的时间一般也很长，和地质队的情况类似。
