My Tips for Finding Great Volunteer Opportunities

1.Go to activity fairs. Activity fairs are a great way to see all of the organizations available on campus at once. They are generally held at the beginning of each school year for incoming freshmen, but upperclassmen can take advantage of this resource too! I actually remember going to an activity fair during my freshman orientation week and that was where I found most of the volunteer activities that I’m still involved with today. Don’t be shy at these events. Walk around and ask questions about any activities that seem interesting to you. At the end of the day, you should be able to narrow it down to a few volunteer opportunities that you’re really interested in pursuing further.

2.Reach out to upperclassmen. Talking to upperclassmen is useful mainly because they can speak from experience about what it’s like to be involved with certain volunteer opportunities. For example, they can clarify what the time commitment is like, what your responsibilities will be, and, most importantly, what you can get out of that experience. Not all volunteer organizations are created equal. Depending on what you want to get out of your volunteering (ex. the chance to work with disadvantaged schools, face to face time with actual patients, just a simple job grabbing coffee for people, etc.), some opportunities may be more suited to you than others and upperclassmen can definitely help you make a more informed decision.

3.Speak to professors/faculty members. Sometimes professors and faculty members can point you in the direction of great volunteer opportunities too. At Stanford, there are a good number of professors that actually run their own small volunteer organizations. These opportunities are not always heavily advertised so you would have to speak with professors in order to find out about them. The next time you find a professor that you are interested in working with, try speaking to them in office hours or after class about possible volunteer opportunities.

4.Explore volunteer resources on campus. There are generally a lot of resources on campus that are aimed at helping students find great volunteer opportunities. At Stanford, the best resources are emailing lists and websites that students can access to find a list of volunteer openings. If your school has similar resources, I would advise staying up to date with them and checking those resources regularly. Sometimes volunteer openings come and go very quickly depending on the organization. These resources are the best way I know of to keep you in the loop about new opportunities. After all, you don’t want to miss out on a potentially fulfilling experience just because you didn’t know about it.

Once you find volunteer opportunities that interest you, begin attending meetings and see what those organizations are like for yourself! When you first start with a volunteer organization, be mindful of a few major elements: what the other members are like, what the time commitment is, what your responsibilities are, and, if you're with the organization for long enough, whether you see yourself getting something worthwhile from this experience. If you feel negatively about any of these elements regarding the organization you're volunteering with, it might be a good idea to reconsider whether this organization is right for you.

For example, say you want to join an organization because they host volunteering trips in hospitals abroad. However, once you attend the meetings, you find out that all you will be doing is paperwork the entire time you are abroad with no real face to face patient interaction. Consequently, this might make you question whether or not you see yourself getting something worthwhile from this experience. If the negative elements outweigh the positive ones, then it would probably be a good idea for you to find another volunteer opportunity.

As a few final words of advice, remember to pursue a volunteer opportunity only if you are interested in it.Don't do volunteer work with a certain organization just because you think it looks good on an application. Chances are, you won't enjoy the experience as much as you would another opportunity that may not be as prestigious but that fits your interests better. If you don't enjoy your volunteering work, you probably won't be able to write as honestly and as passionately about that experience later on in your school applications. Good luck with your search and remember to do what you enjoy!
