Not everyone realizes what a difference it makes if you go to an LAC or an RU. It isn’t true that one is better than the other—LACs offer things that RUs don’t, and vice-versa. But you need to be informed about the choice.

不是每个人都清楚进入文理学院或进入研究型大学到底会给你的生活带来怎样的变化。当然，更不存在一方强于另一方之说——文理学院所具备的，研究型大学不一定有；反之亦然。但是在作出决定之前，对二者有所了解却是必须的。

LACS:

文理学院：

Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, Pomona, and Middlebury are all LACs. LACs tend to have smaller class sizes (Williams has around 500, for example), which means you know more of your fellow students. There’s a distinct sense of community and cooperation between students, and many LACs are in beautiful environments and are tailor-made for student-athletes.

威廉姆斯学院、艾默斯特学院、斯沃斯摩尔学院、波莫纳学院以及明德学院，都是文理学院中的佼佼者。文理学院开设的课程规模通常较小（以威廉姆斯学院为例，一个年级人数大约在五百左右），这意味着你和自己的同学会非常熟悉彼此。不少学院都坐落于风景优美之地，而且它们可以说是为体育特长生量身打造，在这样的环境里，学生的集体感与合作精神无疑是非常出众的。

Academically, LACs get a big advantage in terms of the amount of attention you’ll get. The small class size means it’s much harder to get ‘lost in the crowd’—you will get plenty of face time with your professors, lots of one-on-one conversations with your friends and classmates, and you can have a bigger impact on campus life.

至于学业层面，文理学院在个人培养这一领域可以说占据得天独厚的优势。因为小班化教学大大减少了学生淹没在众多同龄人中以致“迷失自我”现象的产生——你可以有大把时间与自己的教授“零距离”接触，更有数不尽的与同辈、朋友单独交流的机会，自然而然，你也能够与自己的校园生活碰撞出更精彩的火花。

RUs:

研究性大学：

Research Universities differ from LACs because they have large numbers of graduate students who are training for PhDs. Some well-known Research Universities are Stanford, Harvard, Yale, and the University of Michigan. RU’s tend to be located in or around cities and urban areas, which gives them a bigger environment. Combined with larger undergraduate class sizes (ranging from 1,700 at Harvard to 27,000 at Michigan), post-doctoral researchers, and other academic bodies, RUs are more comprehensive in that they have experts in nearly every subject or field.

研究型大学区别于文理学院最突出的一点，就在于攻读博士学位的研究生们也在学校里同本科生一起接受教育。著名的研究型大学有斯坦福大学、哈佛大学、耶鲁大学以及密歇根大学。研究型大学一般会在城镇附近或城市区选址，这就使得这类大学拥有更为丰富多变的周边环境。包含人数众多的本科生（以哈佛大学和密歇根大学为例，它们的规模约在一千七百人和两万七千人左右）、研究生、博士生以及其他学术成员在内，研究型大学几乎可以在任何领域输出人才，其综合性不言而喻。

The upside of attending an RU is that you can come into contact with a wide and diverse range of people—from attending a football game with 40,000 rabid fans to getting involved in highly specialized scientific research. This can provide opportunities to go high and far with your achievements.

进入研究型大学学习的好处之一，就是你能够接触到具有各种社会背景的人——从与其他四万名狂热的橄榄球迷一起观看比赛，到亲身参与高度专业化的科研活动，没有你想不到的事情。而这也能为你日后成就自己的远大前程提供绝佳机会。

How do I decide?

如何选择？

The decision is not easy, and if you are interested in both, you should feel free to apply to both LACs and RUs. But recognize that these institutions have different aims and cultures, and your application might need to be tailored to their values. RUs might be a better fit if you tend to be more independent and self-directed; LACs if you want closer connections with your teachers and classmates.

抉择并非易事。如果你对两类学校都充满兴趣，那么就大大方方遵循自己的意愿，同时申请文理学院和研究型大学。但是千万要清楚：它们二者的目的、校园文化都不尽相同，而你的申请则需要符合对方的标准。倘若你是一个独立自律的学生，不妨选择研究型大学；倘若你希望拥有更加紧密的师生联系和同窗友谊，那文理学院可能更适合你的未来发展。
